Instructor Development Course

NC DOT APPROVED FLAGGER TRAINING

Effective July 1, 2010, anyone directing traffic in a work zone must have completed NC DOT — approved Flagger Training.

Controlling traffic through work zones is one of the most important and dangerous operations in road construction and maintenance. In this National Safety Council's Flagger Instructor Course, you will learn to teach work zone crews standard flagging procedures and how to provide safe passage in and around work areas.

This course will cover:

  • The Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD)
  • ANSI standard ISEA-107-1999
  • How to get students involved in the course
  • How to use course materials
  • Administrative responsibilities
  • Adult learning needs
  • Developing effective teaching skills

When teaching your employees, Flagger Participant Guides must be provided for each student to keep. The laminated guides cost $6.50 each for English or Spanish and include one security-controlled, non-reproducible certificate of completion with wallet card. Flagger certification is good for four years.

Instructor Candidates will receive the Flagger Instructor Kit - Flagger Packaged Training Program that includes:

  • fully scripted Instructor’s Manual
  • CD-ROM with PowerPoint presentation
  • MUTCD Parts, 1, 5, and 6
  • laminated Participant Guide with wallet card

There is a $25 annual renewal fee
